COVID-19 PANDEMIC, A MENACE TO QUALITY EDUCATION

Each and every one of us knows that the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on education is not good. The interaction between teachers and students has been jeopardized due to the closure of schools and universities. There are also inadequacies and inequalities in access to education. The skills and intelligence of students have been challenged. Parents were being involved in the learning of their children. Teachers and mentors have to adjust to the new way of teaching.

The lockdowns to prevent the spread of Covid-19 has interrupted the traditional schooling in which the students go to school to learn from their teachers. Due to the restriction of face-to-face interaction, the students have difficulties in understanding and answering the given modules. The teachers could not able to explain well the lessons. Even there are online classes, the learnings can’t be compared with face-to-face interaction. The process of learning is slowed down and the quality of education is low. In school, the students can improve their skills through the guidance of their teachers and mentors. There are inadequacies and inequalities in the education system because not all parents can afford to buy gadgets for the online classes of their children. Though the government has programs to support the poor learners like providing gadgets and internet support, the fund is not enough for all. Thus, many students didn’t continue their studies. There is also a distribution of printed modules but the students still need gadgets and internet access to do the research about the topics so that they can understand better. Many students committed suicide because of depression due to difficult modules, lack of gadgets, and internet connection problems. Maybe they experienced the feeling of being left behind because they couldn’t pass their modules on time. They seek help from their parents in understanding and answering the modules but unfortunately, not all parents can do so. The teachers also met difficulties with the new way of teaching because they were not prepared. They have to learn the best strategy in teaching by attending webinars. They have to find ways to make their teachings effective even there’s no face-to-face interaction. They were also financially burdened because they spend their own money on gadgets, internet access bills, and cellphone loads. They are not also properly compensated for their heavy workloads.

To help in sustaining quality education like we had before this pandemic, we students should have dedication and determination to our studies. We should have self-discipline and manage well our time to finish and pass the given modules on time. We should be resourceful enough to overcome the obstacles in learning. We should find ways to solve whatever problem we encounter. We must have a strong will and faith in God. On the other hand, we should respect and follow the health protocols set by the government to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Eventually, our situation will become better, and certainly, we will achieve high-quality education in the future.
