Father’s Day is My Superhero Day

Father’s Day is a holiday honoring fatherhood and paternal bonds as well as the influence of fathers in society. It is celebrated to express one’s respect and love for fathers and to cherish the father figures in one’s life. Fathers are our role models, protectors, providers, friends, guides, and heroes. Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June every year. This year, it was celebrated on June 19, 2022. This day was created to complement Mother’s Day.

A key figure in the establishment of Father’s Day was Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd, whose father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, as a single parent reared his six children including Sonora, after the death of their mother during childbirth. She founded the day intending to celebrate her father. Sonora was inspired by a sermon on Mother’s Day and put forward the idea of having a Father’s Day in 1909 to celebrate fathers around the world. The local religious leaders supported her and decided to celebrate the first Father’s Day on 19 June 1910. June was also the month of Dodd’s father’s birthday. In the year 1924, US President Calvin Coolidge gave his support to the celebration of this day, and finally, in 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson officially established it as Father’s Day. President Richard Nixon signed legislation in 1972 and designated the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day. This day was first observed in the USA and has been adopted by many countries. However, Father’s Day is celebrated on different days in different countries. In Spain, Italy, and Portugal, Father’s Day is celebrated on March 19th, which is the Feast of Saint Joseph who is the patron saint of fathers. In Germany, Father’s Day is celebrated on the same date as Ascension Day. Anyway, this day is all about showing respect to the father for his love, care, and sacrifice to provide for the needs of the family. It is to celebrate a father’s contribution to the upbringing of a child, which is often overlooked. Fathers do their best and work hard to give their children a good future. They guide, encourage, and support us in all our endeavors. They are our safety and security. We celebrate Father’s Day by giving gifts, writing sweet messages, and posting pictures of our fathers with heartfelt captions on social media. We can also celebrate this day by simply staying in our home and dedicating our time to our fathers, we can cook delicious foods and eat together as a family.

Father’s Day is a day to honor our fathers but for me, we must always show our respect and love towards our fathers because they are our great providers. We should acknowledge their unending sacrifices in providing us with the best. We should not wait every third Sunday of June to show our love and gratefulness towards our fathers, instead, we should cherish them all the time. We, their children are their strength and courage, thus, we should not fail them. We make them as our inspiration to attain our dreams and let them be proud of us. Let’s brighten the hard days of our fathers by providing for our needs and making them happy. They are our guide to becoming successful in life. I’m grateful to the Lord God that He blessed me with the best father. I was able to write all the good things about a father because they describe my father. He is my everything, my superhero.
