Kannawidan Ylocos Festival: We Ilocanos Are Proud of Who We Are and What We Have

Kannawidan Ylocos Festival is one of the famous festivals in Ilocos Sur. It is a festival commemorating the separation of the two Ilocos provinces in 1818. This festival is a showcase of indigenous performances, religious rituals, as well as cooking demos featuring the best of Ilocano dishes. There are numerous exciting activities during the span of the festival. The Kannawidan Ylocos Festival celebration was opened by the provincial government headed by Gov. Ryan Luis Singson together with Vice Gov. Jeremias Singson, Sangguniang Panlalawigan members, and officials and employees of local government units and national government agencies.

The Kannawidan Ylocos Festival celebration is significant to us Ilocanos because we get to showcase all that we have. We gonna highlight our culture and traditions. We can show our talents and skills as well as our indigenous costumes. We can also showcase our own products like longanisa, bagnet, bibingka, calamay, empanada, basi, and many more. There are many activities in which we, Ilocanos can demonstrate our skills and creativity. We’re able to portray our rich historical heritage and culture. We can see the beauty of our fellow Ilocanas because of the Saniata ti Ylocos Sur pageant. The younger generations become aware of our traditions and appreciate them, especially since they are exposed to modern dances and songs that they see on television and the internet. We, Ilocanos are willing to welcome development but without losing our own inherited culture and traditions. We have also close family ties and this trait is something that we can be proud of. During Kannawidan Festival celebration, we can also showcase our deep-rooted religiosity and devotion. It’s a tradition during the opening of the festival that we have a mass at the Vigan Cathedral followed by a procession of patron saints. The shows, performances, activities, and products during the celebration can attract local and foreign tourists. We can improve our economic status in Ilocos Sur.

Kannawidan Ylocos Festival is conducted to show our rich culture and traditions. Vigan is considered the heart of Ilocandia. This festival is enlightenment that we Ilocanos should patronize our products and introduce them to other people. We should be proud of who we are and what we have. Viva Ilocanos!

  1. I agree that we Ilocanos have a rich culture and traditions. Kannawidan is where we showcase our culture and tradition through our products and participating in the posted activities. But unfortunately, this pandemic limited the activities for safety purposes. Nevertheless, Kannawidan has always been great and fun and I really hope that we will celebrate the next Kannawidan without the ongoing spread of COVID-19 virus.
