March 8 is the day to honor women who play extraordinary roles in our society. It is a celebration of women’s empowerment and gender equality. With the wisdom, passion, and determination of women, they build families and do their best for the betterment of the community and the development of the country. Women are resilient in the face of adversity. They are not feared by the pandemic; instead, they do their best to survive and overcome these uncertainties. They protect and lift not only their families but our country as a whole.
During this global pandemic, women face compounding burdens: they serve as front-liners against COVID-19, do household chores, and face unstable finances and
increased risks of domestic violence. However, despite the hardships they are facing, they remain calm and show their diligence and resiliency. They are unstoppable in their striving for survival, not only for their families but also for others. They meet their responsibilities at home and in the community. Empowerment starts in their homes, where they improve themselves and motivate the other members of their families to become better citizens of our country. They participate with all their might in battling the pandemic. They have an important and valuable contribution to make to bring our country together towards a holistic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. They are active in various sectors like education, politics, agriculture, business, and health services. They multitask wherever they are: at home, school, at work, and in the community. They always find ways to solve a problem or overcome an obstacle that comes their way. Women from all walks of life have shown leadership and compassion in the delivery of inclusive, innovative, and effective responses to the pandemic. In every family, every barangay, every island in the nation, and every small or big organization, we have Juanas who take the roles of solution providers, peacemakers, and trendsetters during these difficult times. Thus, consistent with the Magna Carta of Women, concrete actions shall be taken to achieve equality between men and women, be it in politics, economic participation, health and survival, educational attainment, and other fields.
Women are responsible human beings that empower, serve, inspire, and change the world. The gender gap should be stopped and women should be given equal opportunity and power as men. We should contribute to fighting discrimination and violence against women and achieving gender equality. Let us not stop fighting until we live in a world that is just, fair, inclusive, and conducive to sustainable development. However, this is not a battle of the sexes, but a collective fight for a more peaceful and humane environment that respects and celebrates differences and enables everyone, regardless of gender, to attain his or her full potential. It is therefore a shared responsibility to promote a society that encourages, supports, and empowers everyone, especially women. Salute to all the Juanas in our country!
