World Environment Day is the United Nations Day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment. It is celebrated annually on June 5. The theme on Environment Day is Hero Ways, Zero Waste. This includes our simple ways to promote a zero-waste lifestyle. However, these ways must be done with dedication and consistency. Our environment should not be taken for granted for our wellness.
One of the problems we face is pollution because of unmanaged waste. So, it’s time for every one of us to take action to improve our life by managing well our waste materials to make our environment clean. This also promotes good health for everyone. We must start a zero-waste lifestyle as soon as possible. First, we should segregate our waste materials. There should be a separate trash can for plastics and metals, papers, biodegradable wastes, and glass bottles and jars. Inside our home, there should also be a box wherein we can place old clothes and shoes that we don’t use anymore, we can bring these things to the church so that people who may need them can collect them. We must declutter our home now and then. We throw out or donate the things we don’t need anymore so that our homes will be more organized and clean. In every community, there should be several bins wherein we can throw our segregated wastes. The government should provide four or five bins so that people can throw their waste properly. Anyway, if our government could not provide bins, the residents of the community could improvise bins and then the wastes thrown should be collected by garbage collectors for proper disposal. On the other hand, we can also dig a pit wherein we can throw the biodegradable wastes. Another way, we must practice reducing food waste. We should only buy things that we need or what we’re capable of consuming. We should also lessen the use of plastics and disposable things. We can also reuse or recycle things instead of throwing them away and becoming waste. On the other hand, all biodegradable wastes should be thrown in a compost bin and let decayed to be used as fertilizer for the plants in our garden. To sum up, there are many simple ways we can practice promoting a zero-waste lifestyle to improve our well-being.
Every one of us should practice a zero-waste lifestyle because our planet is our home and we should pay more attention to it. Hand in hand, we maintain cleanliness. By doing so, we also protect our health. Let’s take action now and start enjoying zero-waste living. Let’s do it responsibly and consistently. As they say, great changes may not happen right away but with great efforts, even the difficult may become easy. Let’s be zero waste heroes not only in our home but also in our whole community!
